Joseph is based on the Biblical story of Joseph, found in the book of Genesis, however the musical certainly isn't a Christian story. Set in a frame we are told about Joseph by a narrator who is telling the story to encourage children around the stage to dream.

In the beginning of the story Jacob and his 12 sons are introduced. The brothers are jealous of Joseph for his beautiful coat, which is a symbol of their father's favouritism for him. Moreover, Joseph has dreams which makes it very clear that he is destined to rule over them.

To get rid of Joseph and to ensure his dreams can not come true, the brothers sell him as a slave to some passing Ishmaelites, who in turn take him to Egypt. What will Joseph do and how will he get back to his father Jacob?
